Leslieville mainstay and local realtor, Mark Bullen, visits the area’s newest attraction: McGugan’s Scottish Pub
‘You could have taken the whole bowl’ she frowned, witheringly. I swallowed the single, golden french fry I had just unwittingly plucked from one of six wee vessels on the server’s tray and tried to save a little face. “It’s this darn paleo diet…carbs you know?” I offered meekly.
The occasion of my embarrassing hors d’oeuvre faux pas was the sneek peek, friends, family and neighbours night at the newest Leslieville pub – McGugan’s, and scanning the packed to the rafters venue on this night I’d venture that these guys have a ton of friends family and neighbours. How could they not? Proprietor Mary McGugan is an absolutely charming host, and has a knack for making even those that can’t manage to behave themselves around the snack trays feel right at home.
McGugans along with The Great Burger Kitchen, Grinders and Starbucks have totally transformed the intersection of Gerrard and Jones from a rather bleak little strip of sketchy retail enterprises to a real destination and local residents (myself included) could not be happier. “I’m going to LIVE here” chimes one patron within earshot.
While still needing a few finishing touches, the pub is warm and inviting, themed as one might expect, with deep reds and dark wainscoting. Partner Bryan Burke assures me the venue will be up and running in a few days pending city inspections. The second floor ‘kilt room’ will feature HD televisions and satellite and will accommodate 35 for special game viewing.
Bagpipes, sword dancing, mini haggis on a stick and a fantastic beer selection including the delicious Innis and Gunn made for a perfect Robbie Burns night and yeah, you read that right, I said mini haggis on a stick.
Bring some friends and an appetite to McGugan’s. I’ll be seeing you there!
Leslieville, it just keep getting better.
